The Candidate

Terrance Power, CFP®, ERPA, QPA®, CRPS®

Terry Power grew up in Kenmore, New York (just north of Buffalo). He is the grandson of Irish immigrants who came to this country in search of a brighter future for their growing family. Terry moved to Florida and North Pinellas County in 1985. Florida House District 64 is home to both his family and his businesses.

Terry has had a very successful 37 year career in the retirement plan services industry. He spent nineteen years as an investment adviser and retirement plan wholesaler with large national firms. He founded American Pension Services, Inc. in 2000 in Tampa, and has worked to see it grow into a niche player in the retirement plan consulting community on a national level. American Pension Services has been recognized every year by the Tampa Bay Business Journal as one of the area's largest Employee Benefits Consulting firms. Terry serves as the President and CEO of American Pension Services.

Terry is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and is widely quoted in the financial media. With 11 recognized professional industry designations (beginning with having earned his Certified Financial Planner - CFP ® - designation in 1988), Terry is one of the most well-credentialed individuals in the retirement plan industry today.

Although a newcomer to political office, Terry has been involved with Republican party efforts in Pinellas County for many years. Many of his earliest interactions with local elected officials can be traced back to his experiences in Family Court during a stressful five year divorce. His story, which was covered in detail in the Tampa Bay Times, gives a glimpse into the terrible problems that exist in Family Court in Florida today. He remains extremely involved in family law reform efforts in Florida and looks forward to fixing this broken system.

As the founder and owner of several local businesses, Terry has had to make daily decisions about Worker's  Comp, Employee Healthcare, and staffing and budget issues. He's had to meet payroll and develop a successful business without the help of any shady backroom shenanigans from career politicians. He, like all small business owners, has had to work tirelessly for years to develop a successful operation that he and his entire team are tremendously proud of. He believes that small businesses are the backbone of our nation's economy. Terry's experience and business expertise - unhindered by special interest groups who have many politicians by the wallet - is something that is sorely lacking in Tallahassee.

He's also not interested in having you, the taxpayers, paying him for what should be a public service as an elected official. That's why he's going to donate his net income from his House Rep salary to local charities in District 64.

Terry is running because he is the best candidate in the race to serve the residents of Florida House District 64. His incumbent primary opponent has been the focus of a grand jury corruption investigation involving millions of dollars of taxpayer money. His track record (or lack thereof) of legislative accomplishments is underwhelming. All of these issues are likely reasons that his own Republican colleagues in the Florida House solidly rejected his bid by nearly a 2-1 margin for him to be designated as House Speaker in 2022 when they voted in mid-2017.

Even his fellow legislators know that he's not right to lead the Florida House, let alone our District.

"I'll leave it up to the voters to decide how corrupt, unethical, and ineffective they think that Grant is as a legislator and whether he needs to find another line of work outside of Tallahassee", states Power.

Terry has made up his mind. That's why he's in the race to win in 2018!

Terry attended Canisius College in Buffalo, his father's (and three of his sister's) alma mater. He was a History major and minored in Accounting. He is a member of the Canisius College Leadership Society and is active with Canisius alumni groups in Florida.

Terry has flown general aviation airplanes since the age of 17. He is a member of the AOPA Foundation Hat in the Ring Society, an organization that works to help insure the future of aviation in our country. He remains active in supporting youth aviation activities in the community. His work organizing and flying Hurricane Irma relief supplies to Southwest Florida and Key West drew national attention recently, including his being named a co-recipient of a National Business Aviation Association's 2017 Humanitarian Award along with other general aviation pilots who jumped into action in the wake of devastating natural disasters our region experienced this year.

He's a huge Tampa Bay Lightning fan and has been a season ticket holder for several years. Terry enjoys football and is a fan of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but will admit that he maintains a soft spot in his heart for his Buffalo Bills, the team he rooted for all through his childhood growing up in Western New York.

Terry asks for your support, and he would be honored to have your vote as your Representative in Tallahassee. Thank you for your consideration, your trust, and your confidence.
